NRLC was setup in 1976 as a subordinate office of Ministry of Culture with vision to advance conservation of cultural heritage and achieve excellence through:

The mission of NRLC is to enhance and encourage conservation addressing unsolved questions, demonstrating best conservation practices, and developing sustainable conservation solutions.
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of the laboratory are as follows:
- Research leading to the development of better methodology for conservation of ancient artifacts.
- Technical studies of art and archaeological materials.
- Technical assistance to museums, archaeological departments and other institutions in the field of scientific analysis and preservation.
- Training of new and working conservators towards capacity building.
- Scientific examination of objects of museums and monuments to device better conservation strategy.
- Documentation services (Dissemination of information in the area of conservation).
- Publication of research papers, booklets, conference paper to disseminate knowledge.
- International liaison taking up collaboration project with national and international institutions, exchange of scientific knowledge and personnel.
